SUBJECT: INCREASED PIRACY ATTACKS IN THE GULF OF ADEN

Dear Owners/Operators/Masters:

Several recent attacks have occurred on vessels transiting the Eastern Gulf of Aden, including: o 28 May 08 vessel hijacked at 1040 UTC while underway in position 13:09N 048.58E o 25 May 08 cargo vessel hijacked at 1559 UTC while underway in position 13:14.68N

050:49.71E o Ships fired upon in above vicinity 19, 22, 23, 24, 25 May.

IMB has issued the following Navigation Warning and Precautionary Measures for vessels transiting the area:

“GULF OF ADEN A TOTAL OF SIX ATTEMPTED ATTACKS HAVE BEEN REPORTED BY VESSELS RECENTLY SINCE 191720 UTC AROUND LAT: 12:49.3N – LONG. 050:36.3E, 13:16.2N - 049:08.7E, 13.25.2N – 047:57.8E, 14:02NN – 050:46E, 13:16.2N - 049:08.7E, 12:45.7N – 046:43.6E, PIRATES FIRING AT

VESSELS INCLUDING ROCKET PROPELLED GRENADES ATTEMPTING TO BOARD AND POSSIBLY HIJACK. ALL VESSELS TRANSITING THE GULF OF ADEN ARE ADVSIED TO TAKE ADDITIONAL PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES AND MAINTAIN A STRICT 24 HRS ANTI PIRACY WATCH VISUAL AND RADAR WATCH. LOOK OUT FOR SMALL SUSPICIOUS BOATS CONVERGING TO OWN VESSEL. REPORT ALL INCIDENTS INCLUIDNG SUSPICIOUS SIGHTING TO IMB PIRACY REPORTING CENTRE.”

In addition to taking the Precautionary Measures recommended by IMB, Masters/SSOs of Liberian flagged vessels heading to or transiting the area should set a minimum of Security Level 2 and take appropriate added security measures in accordance with the vessel's SSP.

Vessels transiting the Eastern Gulf of Aden are required to report setting of SECURITY LEVEL II to the Administration via email to security@LISCR.com.
