MARITIME SECURITYADVISORY – 09/2008

SUBJECT: Maritime Security Patrol area in the Gulf of Aden

For The Information of Owners/Operators/Masters:

In response to recent increase in piracy attacks on vessels transiting the Gulf of Aden, a force of Coalition Navy warships has recently been established and a Maritime Security Patrol Area (MSPA) has been created in the Gulf of Aden. The Liberian Administration has been informed by the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) that this coalition force of navy warships will patrol the area and aircraft will fly in the above airspace thus creating a ‘Safe Corridor’. Although safe passage through this corridor can not be guaranteed by the Coalition Navies, they have indicated that the area will be patrolled more frequently and strongly recommend use of the corridor.

The coordinates for this corridor are:

Waypoint: 12 15N 045E

Waypoint: 12 35N 045E

Waypoint: 13 35N 049E

Waypoint: 13 40N 049E

Waypoint: 14 10N 050E

Waypoint: 14 15N 050E

Waypoint: 14 35N 053E

Waypoint: 14 45N 053E

Coordinates of the corridor are also transmitted by the IMB Centre via Inmarsat C (Satellite) EGC 3 Safety Net at 0000 UTC three times a week.

Ships should contact the Coalition Navy via email prior to arrival at: ukmtodubai@eim.ae and via VHF in case of attack or attempted attack. Vessels are encouraged to contact the IMB Piracy Reporting Center Tel: +603 2078 5763 / +603 2031 0014 Email: piracy@icc-ccs.org / piracy@imbpiracy.org for advice or to report suspicious activity.

This Security Advisory DOES NOT supersede any previous Security Advisories and Masters/SSOs of Liberian flagged vessels heading to or transiting the area are still required to set a minimum of Security Level 2 and take appropriate added security measures in accordance with the vessel's SSP.

Vessels transiting the Eastern Gulf of Aden are required to report setting of SECURITY LEVEL II to the Administration via email to security@LISCR.com.
